How to use it

What this workbook does

This workbook builds the fully loaded annual cost of an employee. It adds employer payroll taxes, benefits, workers’ comp, retirement match, and overhead on top of base pay, and shows the total as a multiple of pay, a monthly figure, and an effective cost per hour worked. It handles salaried or hourly pay and includes an optional first-year view for one-time hiring and setup costs.

Your first 15 minutesOpen the Employee Cost Calculator workbook in Microsoft Excel or a free equivalent such as LibreOffice. The first tab, Start Here, walks you through every tab. Open the Employee Cost Calculator tab, choose Salaried or Hourly from the dropdown, then replace the amber cells with your numbers. The payroll taxes calculate automatically at current federal rates; set your state unemployment rate where shown.
