How to use it

What this workbook does

Contingent labor is often the largest off-payroll spend a company carries, and it sits outside the HRIS headcount. This workbook prices the same workers four ways: on a staffing agency bill rate, on a payrolling arrangement at a lower markup, on your payroll without benefits, and on your payroll fully benefited. It shows the total cost of each route, the savings against the agency option, and how fast any conversion cost pays for itself. The Program Model rolls the same math across every pay band in your contingent program, the Burden Builder turns the burden defaults into your real numbers, and the Scenario Compare weighs staying put against a partial or full conversion.

Your first 15 minutesOpen the Contingent Labor Cost & Conversion Workbook workbook in Microsoft Excel or a free equivalent such as LibreOffice. The first tab, Start Here, walks you through every tab. On the SingleRole Calculator tab, enter your headcount, hours, weeks, pay rate, and any conversion or severance cost, then set the markup and burden rates across the four columns. The total cost of each route, the savings against the agency, and the breakeven read calculate below. Edit only the amber cells; the white cells calculate for you.

See what an employee costs in full, not just the salary. The workbook adds payroll taxes, benefits, workers’ comp, paid time off, and overhead. It then gives you the fully loaded annual cost, the cost per month, and the real hourly rate.
