How to use it

What this workbook does

Estimate the cost of a reduction in force using one severance policy. Enter each affected employee's pay and tenure to calculate individual packages and the total group cost. The Full Cost tab adds accrued time off, a benefits subsidy, outplacement, and employer payroll tax.

Your first 15 minutesOpen the Severance Planning Calculator workbook in Microsoft Excel or a free equivalent such as LibreOffice. The first tab, Start Here, explains each tab. At the top of the Severance Calculator tab, set your policy: weeks per year of service, any base weeks added to everyone, a cap, and a minimum. Then enter each person's role, salary, and years of service in the amber cells.
